However, after my lovely experience in the Reflexology Room I have to admit that I’m a changed woman. To be fair, before I arrived I wasn’t too sure what reflexology was but never one to shirk away from new challenges, I decided to give it a go and boy am I glad I did.

Based in Holywood High Street, the Reflexology Room is owned by Tara O’Dornan, who is a qualified reflexology teacher and a self-fulfilling prophecy as treatments actually changed her life. But what exactly is it? Well according to her site, “Reflexology is a holistic therapy that treats the whole person and not just the symptom, it treats mind, body and soul. The treatment involves applying pressure on reflex points on the feet which correspond with areas and organs of the body, to detoxify and release any blockages physically or emotionally that are causing a negative effect on the body and mind.”

I didn’t have any specific reason for going, I just wanted some ‘me’ time, as I heard the benefits of reflexology are endless. Regular treatments can reduce stress levels significantly – which is judged as many as the main cause for subsequent ailments throughout the body. In fact, it has been proven that more than 90% of illnesses are caused by stress. When stress is present, our bodies are at disease and reflexology works to reduce stress and therefore reduce the build up of disease. This is music to my ears because one of my main issues in life is stress and not being able to relax properly.

Stress aside, Tara tells me she is also seeing women with fertility problems as the treatment can often help. For example it can improve circulation, balance the hormone production necessary for conception to occur and promote strong health and vitality in the reproductive organs.

It can also increase the body’s immune system function and help improve other areas that maybe causing imbalance and blocking the natural flow of the body’s function. This is only some of the ways it can help – Tara is the expert and I’m sure can give you additional advice if you need it.

I can only go on my experience, and I can honestly say that it was the best hour or so I’ve spent in a while. Tara made me feel so at ease, especially as feet can be a pretty awkward area – or is that just me?? She was able to tell me about the different parts of my body that often cause me other health problems and was able to work out my personality after ‘reading’ my feet – who would have thunk it!

With the festive season just round the corner (yes the music has already started playing on the radio) a couple of months treatment here would be the perfect present for the busy person in your life – because let’s face it, some quality ‘me’ time is for life and not just for Christmas!
